A Note About Donations

I've recently been reading some kind words on the DUC regarding donating to the blog and each post has been appreciated in terms of those saying 'come on support this guy and all his work'. I really do appreciate the sentiment expressed by those people (all of which have made donations) but what I don't want is to create a culture of guilt, it's the worst motivator in the world, on the whole it doesn't work, if it did then why is online porn so successful?

Those who don't donate fall into 2 camps; those who can't and those who won't.

Those Who Can't
These are the people who would love to donate but just don't have the resources, and to those of you who are in this camp, then please take all you like and when you can pay it forward.

Those Who Won't
These are the people who can contribute but choose not to, it's not a high enough priority in their life to contribute to a community. If that's you, then if you do change your mind, then it would be appreciated so we can continue to invest in this community.

Some of you, especially donors may think that it's not fair, that some give and others don't. Of course it isn't fair, but the value of this blog far exceeds a monetary value. If life was fair I'd be getting $50,000K a year from Digi for the work I put it, that's the lower rate of pay for successful marketing and PR executives and I don't think anyone in their right mind would suggest that this blog is not benefiting Digi enormously. The last survey showed an increase use of AIR products of over 85% since the blog started. With over 40,000 hits and about 20,000 visitors a month that's a big number.

But I didn't start it for money, I started it because I saw a need and met it, some may say that it's Digi's job to deal with it. They have finite resources and it's a poor argument anyway. It's the same as suggesting that if I see a guy bleeding in the gutter that I walk on by because I'm not a paid paramedic. If I were the man lying in the gutter I'm hoping volunteer or professional stops and helps me.

So to those who have donated, a HUGE Thank-You! You know who you are and every one of you should have received a personal thank-you email from me. For those who can't afford to donate, keep coming, don't let guilt keep you from coming - take what you can with no strings attached. Finally for those who can and haven't yet made the decision to donate, then please do think about it for the sake of those who can't afford to give.

To all of you the greatest reward is that we have a community around the world all linked by one DAW, and I hope because of this blog, who are now more equipped than ever to make great music.

It's not about the money, it's about the music!

Transfuser Could Take The Stylus Crown

I love Stylus, I've used it for years, I appreciate the small team headed by Eric that have created the groove machine that appears on some of the top songs and movies. So at the outset of this post you need to appreciate I have no axe to grind in suggesting there may be something better suited to the needs of Pro Tools users for this job, I'm a hardened Stylus user.

It wasn't until I started to use Transfuser in preparation for making the new training series on the blog that I realized that Digidesign have not made enough of the similarities AND more importantly the features in Transfuser that beat Stylus hands down - even in the RMX 1.7 latest incarnation.

Both of them use a similar concept; create multi-layered grooves for use in your music. Stylus was the first to really capture this market and did it so well that soon it held the crown as the 'go to' groove generator.

As I said earlier I don't think Digidesign/AIR have done the best job in marketing Transfuser, because many users think it's aimed at the dance and remix market, let me set the record straight, it's aimed clearly at anyone who uses Stylus, and in my opinion could offer some features to beat Stylus.

First, let me tell you what I love about Stylus...

  • A great library of grooves, with the thrown in expander kits, this covers most popular genres and styles.
  • The meticulous detail given to the sounds by Eric and the team.
  • The ease of operation in creating a groove
  • The features for mashing up the sound
  • The ease for dragging and dropping MIDI files into Pro Tools
  • Groove lock
It's these things and a lot more that have made Stylus what it is. But now let me tell you the things which make me scream at Stylus:
  • The proprietary way it handles loops, you can't drop any loop in, only REX loops converted with the supplied SAGE converter, and as I say only REX loops. So unless you want to invest in Recycle getting your own loops in is a none starter.
  • The huge resource load it puts on your processor, in fact all Spectrasonics VIs have resources hogging issues.
  • The limited track count of 8 parts per groove.
  • Currently the laggy and buggy performance of 1.7 (in all its incarnations, be that d,e or f!)
So imagine my surprise to find that Transfuser does all the same things as Stylus, AND it deals with all my gripes AND does a lot more to boot!

So a Stylus killer? Perhaps.

You can drop ANY kind of loop and in fact any kind of audio that it slices without a second thought, it's a simple as dragging and dropping.

Resource issues are a thing of the past, which surprises me because it shouldn't be the case, let me explain. Stylus takes what is basically a REX loop and triggers it from MIDI events, so the resource issue shouldn't be one in the first place. Whereas Transfuser is doing the same job without any of the load issues.

No limited track count! Just keep dragging your loops in until your computer falls over, and trust me that's a lot longer than Stylus takes to kick up our lovable 'resource issue' dialogue box.

It works like a dream, no lag, no immediate bugs, although I am aware that there are some issues which are being worked through by AIR. But in reality these are no way close to the issues presenting themselves in Stylus and shouldn't keep you from making killer grooves.

One killer trick in Tranfuser is the great way you can make an audio grab of a 1/2/4 bar groove and then simply drag that back into the Pro Tools time-line. You have no idea how many times I've had to print Stylus grooves to tracks just to free up resources.

I have mixed feelings about writing this article, in some ways I feel like I'm betraying an old friend in writing this. Has Stylus been faithful to me, well yes, but in reality I've stuck with Stylus with all its idiosyncratic ways and more latterly almost unusable performance. I know that Eric and the gang work incredibly hard and live and breathe this stuff. So if this was an award for passion then Spectrasonics would win.

But this isn't, it's a decision about what makes grooves better and more importantly simpler and for that reason Transfuser takes the crown!

With over 40,000 hits a month the blog has created enormous influence in a very short space of time, so don't take my word for it, if you haven't tried it and you use Stylus in Pro Tools then download the demo from Digidesign and you'll see what I mean! If you are not a Stylus user then I strongly recommend you still download the FREE trial of Transfuser - it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

M Audio Axiom Pro - Sneak Peek Part 1

Often product reviews tell us about the 'how' and 'what' of a product, seldom do they tell us the why, why was the creator of the product inspired to make it in the first place.

Tim, is in his late 20's, unassuming, articulate and who bears an uncanny resemblance to Chris Martin of Coldplay. Tim came up with the concept of making M-Audios vision for a high end keyboard a reality, in fact he is the creator of this baby and I had the chance to sit down with him at Digi HQ in London on Monday. A rare insight not only into what the keyboard does but why he came up with it.

Tim has been making music for as long as he can remember and in that time he has worked on many of the major DAWs and used most of the keyboards and controllers out there. A helpful start for a man trying to create something to help us make music better, and that is exactly what the Axiom Pro is all about and what inspired Tim.

His vision is to use the power of the computer, yet making its part in the process as transparent as possible, or to put it his way "You can have every tool or command you frequently use during music production and instant access to important Instrument or Mixer parameters right there in front of you. This way you can focus on making music. And that's all we want to do at the end of the day!"

I'm calling this part one, because once you lay your hands on an Axiom Pro your realize that just a few hours with this baby is not going to do it justice in a review and if this baby deserves anything, it's justice. So for the most part this is an overview, we'll go deeper at a later date, once I've played with this baby for a week or so.

Equipment users fall broadly into two camps; first the ones who want instant gratification, you know the kind I mean, the kind who rip open the box and play away. When a problem arises their first response to tech support when asked about reading the manual is 'what manual?' The second are those who want to get it open and dig deep until every function has been explored, exploited and in some cases shown to be flawed! In most cases these users try and get the manual ahead of the product, so by the time it arrives they have consumed every last word.

So camp one, instant gratification, does the Axiom Pro deliver?

Simply put, yes. You plug it in via USB, fire up Pro Tools and there you are a keyboard ready to play all your VIs, not only that it's also ready to operate Pro Tools, or all the popular DAWs. You can select tracks, arm record, loop sections, mute, solo, open your VIs and plugins and tweak away, Tim again "When you select a track using the Axiom Pro, the track is automatically record enabled. The controls and the keyboard instantly map to the Virtual Instrument on that track. Everything is instantaneous and works regardless of whether the Plug-in window is open or closed."

For some this will be enough and on that score the Axiom Pro is hardly shifting any paradigms. BUT! Yes but, this is where the Axiom gets really exciting, as Tim started to explain the use of the controllers and on the Axiom Pro it becomes apparent this is one powerful piece of kit, but before I wax lyrical, let me explain a little about the technology.

Usually events are controlled within DAWs with MIDI CC messages, which can be limiting, as some of you will know. One company who have made some headway is Novation with their mapping technology. This is effectively a wrapper which intercepts the messages between the controller and the DAW and then interprets them. So most controllers are separating the MIDI data from the control data.

Axiom Pro HyperControl technology works transparently within the DAW - removing the need for a wrapper and creates a live two way link between the keyboard and the DAW. Everything you see on the Axiom Pro's display is dictated by the DAW. If you make a change on the computer it is updated live on the screen of the Axiom Pro. This does three things; first all the data is now real data and not MIDI CC. Secondly, it significantly reduces the need to look at your computer monitor or to have a plug-in window open covering up the Edit window. Finally, it means the possibilities are endless in terms of control of your computer from your controller.

Yes, I just said, computer, not just DAW. It quickly became apparent when Tim and I were playing that I could do just about anything. We set up the controller to run a Pro Tools session with some VIs, but then we had some fun. I never use the drum pads on keyboards so I decided to set them up for something far more useful. Within an minute I was using them to check my email whilst running Pro Tools. Yes, check my email. We had a loop record session running and when I needed to check my email I just hit one of the drum pads - all this because you can assign ASCII commands to controllers. With a little thought, a quick lesson in programming and you will be able to come up with some ingenious ways of using this baby.

Furthermore unlike the standard Axioms the firmware is completely updatable, which means what we see here is Axiom Pro HyperControl v1.00. There is always scope for new features to be added in future firmware revisions.

I have some minor gripes, and they are minor. Not faults but things which could be done better and need to be added to a wish list - and don't we all have those!

The Axiom Pro is not cheap for a controller, but to suggest that it can be compared to the run-of-the-mill controllers on the market is absurd. This is one piece of kit and even after a few hours with the beast and its creator I was convinced that what Tim had set out to do, which was to make the whole creative process simpler, had been achieved.

Should you buy one? Well that's not for me to say and I know that the AIR Blog has the possibility to influence. OK let me put it this way, anyone who ignores the Axiom Pro would be foolish. If you are new to the whole world of MIDI and DAWs then my only piece of advice is that the Axiom Pro isn't the easiest or cheapest controller on the market, but then again how could it be?

In closing I know that this controller is an enormously powerful piece of kit for studio and live use, all I need to do is find my credit card! Part 2 is here

Digidesign Structure Sounds Set 22 - Roland D50

Just like the DX7 and the Korg M1, the Roland D50 was a landmark on the timeline of Synth history, a for while took the crown as 'must-have' synth. This set is unique insofar as every patch is created with just one sample, but don't be put off they are still very usable - we'll be making a more comprehensive set later, but for now take a trip and be reminded of the signature sounds that made this baby such a great synth. A side-note is that many people bought the D50 because it has such a great keyboard, so if you spot one going cheap you might think about buying it. But for now...

  • D50 Fantasia MP3
  • D50 OK Chorale MP3
